PRESS RELEASE

For immediate release

1st June 2007

Statement regarding Alan Johnson’s comments on the Today programme (31st May 2007)

The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007: Guidance for Schools

‘Guidance is already available in the area of Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Sex and Relationship Education (SRE), which sets out the requirements for schools – with the promotion of respect and pupil welfare being of paramount importance.  It makes clear that teaching, particularly in these areas, should meet the needs of all young people, whatever their developing sexuality or family circumstances.’

The CES understands and supports this guidance.  All SRE in Catholic schools typically places great emphasis on the importance of human relationships and respect for one another.  Naturally the importance of marriage features in this and we would expect that all SRE is carried out in line with the teachings of the Church.
