The DCSF, in partnership with the Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo), has produced an online resource pack for schools in order to build on the DCSF guidance document of 2007, Guidance on the Duty to Promote Community Cohesion. This online tool provides practical information, advice and support for schools, as well as specific information to help governors fulfil the legal requirements of the new Duty.
In May 2008, CES met with the Chair of iCoCo, Professor Ted Cantle, and his colleague responsible for the educational aspects of iCoCo's remit, Alveena Malik. The CES will continue to work closely with iCoCo to ensure that the contribution of Catholic schools and colleges to community cohesion is reflected appropriately in iCoCo's work with Government, local authorities and others. See www.coventry.ac.uk/researchnet/icoco for more details about iCoCo.
The online resource pack is split up into the following sections:
- Introduction to Community Cohesion: the wider picture; legislation
- School leaders' information: leadership and management issues (including a six-point planning framework, checklist for leaders and governors, TDA school improvement framework, auditing your school's effectiveness section); governors; different types of schools (including faith schools)
- Teaching and Learning: teaching and learning related to cohesion; citizenship and creative work; learning from people outside the school; raising staff awareness and skills; auditing your school's effectiveness
- Equity and excellence (includes information about equalities and discipline policies)
- Community engagement and ethos: local community analysis; who is the school serving; school linking; student voice
- FAQs

The CES would be very interested in any feedback from Catholic schools on a) the DCSF/iCoCo resource pack and b) our new publication Catholic Schools and Community Cohesion: CES Guidance (2008). Please email your comments and suggestions to general@cesew.org.uk and let us know what more the CES could be doing to publicise the contribution of Catholic schools to community cohesion.
