Introduction to Sixthformers at Sacred Heart School, Newcastle
*

Service to the community in a Newcastle school

The following set of edited statements about sixth form students at Sacred

Heart School in Newcastle-upon-Tyne illustrates an unusually wide range of

commitments outside the formal curriculum. These include many school-centred activities, as peer mentors, reading buddies, school councillors and

leaders of numerous charitable and issue-based groups. Outside the school these students and others like them make an equally important contribution, to local charities of many kinds, primary schools, young people’s activities and other groups serving the community. The statements illustrate something of the richness of what service to the community, a central part of the 14-19 curriculum, can mean in a Catholic context.
