| Archbishop Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Birmingham and Chairman of the Catholic Education Service, delivered the homily at the Annual Service of the Headmasters' and Headmistress' Conference, the body which represents 240 leading British independent schools.
In the homily, Archbishop Nichols spoke used the anaolgy of how vines are pruned before they become frutiful. We need to examine "our values, our life style, [and] the elements which make up the mosaic of our vision of education" if we are to reach a full fruitfulness. | |

| He examined the lives of St. Chad, the patron saint of the Cathedral, and St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day it was, in order to demonstrate how we can use our prvilieges for the service of others.
He concluded, "Each pruning will enhance what our age most profoundly seeks: a society at ease with itself because it is at ease with its Maker; a world striving for justice because it is aware of the roots of that justice; a pattern of life which respects the dignity of each person, because it is attentive to the One who alone confers that dignity; an experience of lasting, faithful love because there is a willingness to forego immediate satisfaction for the greater good of the beloved; a deeply rooted hope which overcomes both weariness and cynicism because it is founded on a promise of life which has already won its victory over death." |
