Lord Andrew Adonis to Speak At CES National Education Conference, 18th May 2006

Following last week’s Cabinet reshuffle, the CES today learnt that Alan Johnson, will not be fulfilling Ruth Kelly’s commitment whilst Secretary of State for Education and Skills, to be the keynote speaker at the Catholic Education Services’ Conference, Church and Government; Shared Interests?

The CES are, however, delighted that Lord Andrew Adonis, Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Schools, will speak on behalf of Government at the conference.  Oona Stannard, the Chief Executive of the CES, noted that the Catholic community has built up a good working relationship with Lord Adonis and that he was a recent speaker at a conference of Diocesan Schools’ Commissioners.  Andrew knows our sector well, knows the issues we face and will be a knowledgeable speaker at the conference.  Oona noted that “No current Minister knows the brief of education as well as he does”.  She said “I am confident that his input to our discussions will be invaluable and that he too will learn much from the opportunity to talk with the 150 delegates attending the conference.  He knows our sector well and knows the issues that we face.  Talking with him at this stage of the progress of the Education and Inspection Bill should prove very helpful”.
