CATHOLIC SIXTH FORM COLLEGES RECOGNISED FOR EXCELLENCE

Catholic Education Service applauds the success of Catholic 6th Form Colleges and the Award of Beacon Status to Holy Cross Catholic 6th Form College, Bury, and Loreto Catholic 6th Form College, City of Manchester

Today, two more of our fifteen Catholic 6th Form Colleges in England have been recognised as outstanding and will be presented with a Beacon Award in London. Such awards have only been made to thirteen of the country’s ninety eight, 6th Form Colleges. Of these thirteen Beacon Awards, four have been made to Catholic 6th Form Colleges. This means that a quarter of Catholic 6th Form Colleges have been acknowledged for their exemplary success; a remarkable achievement.

At a time of much proposed change in education 14-19 years, it is an enormous boost to note the conspicuous success of Catholic 6th Form Colleges. Given that only thirteen colleges have been awarded such status nationally, it is a real achievement for Catholic education that four of these are Catholic colleges.

St Charles Catholic 6th Form College in West London and Christ the King Catholic 6th Form College in Lewisham already have Beacon Status. The award of Beacon Status recognises overall excellence in the institutions, including high quality teaching, excellent leadership and management and, most importantly, high achievement for the students. In gaining Beacon status, our Catholic 6th Form Colleges serve as models of good practice to be celebrated and shared nationally. The award of Beacon Status is also an indicator of very good value added. The advanced level value added measures, for example, place Loreto’s A2 performance within the top ten 6th Form Colleges nationally. Holy Cross was rated 11th out of four hundred and twenty nine colleges for A level results.

In commending the success of Catholic 6th Form Colleges, and particularly those that have achieved Beacon Status, Oona Stannard, Chief Executive of the Catholic Education Service, noted that these achievements are only realised through the dedication and hard work of all those involved in the colleges, including all who work there, the Governors and the students. She commended them for the strong sense of community that has been developed. She noted that they are getting the best from each individual student and that success is not measured simply by the achievements of the most able but by doing justice to the ability of all students in the colleges. She went on to express her hope that such distinctive education will be enabled to continue to flourish under the proposals of the 14-19 Reform Group (Tomlinson’s Working Group) and that young people can continue to benefit from the very strong Catholic anchor that Catholic 6th Form Colleges clearly provide for their students and the community.
